THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: At a time when Ayurveda is gaining popularity
the world over, the Centre is mulling over including this traditional
system of treatment in the Army Medical Wing. The newly formed Ayush
Department has placed a proposal with the Defence Ministry, which is
said to be positively considering it. “Our department has placed a
proposal before the Defence Ministry.
“I have even talked to
Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar, who has taken it very positively,”
Union Minister of State for Ayush Shripad Yesso Naik has said.
“In the discussions with the Defence Minister, he has endorsed about the
importance of including Ayurveda in the Army Medical Wing. He has
responded positively and the government is working on it,” Naik told
‘Express’.Naik said that Ayurveda has been proven since
thousands of years that it is the best system of medicine that caters to
Nature. “Many persons from the Defence forces had told us that they are
advocates of Ayurveda. And as such, we decided to approach the Defence
Ministry,” he said. Apart from the serving personnel, the demand for its
inclusion has come up from the retired also. Moreover, there is also a
demand to recognise Ayurveda treatment for medical reimbursement in the
services. Earlier, when the Minister was in Kerala last month, the
Ayurveda Medical Association of India (AMAI) had given a representation
for including Ayurveda in the Army Medical Wing.
AMAI general
secretary Rejith Anand said many of the serving and retired Army
personnel had been demanding inclusion of Ayurveda in military services.
“Our soldiers are always exposed to extreme weather conditions. They
need special care for retaining good health. Here Ayurveda has its on
speciality known as seasonal health care system,” he said.
