As part of an awareness programme to promote the cultivation of
medicinal herbs, 50 schools in the district will be provided seeds and
saplings.
With Ayurveda gradually regaining its lost lustre as
conferences and workshops around the city are seen discussing its
benefits, the formal inauguration of an Oushadha Sasya Thottam
(medicinal herb garden) in schools in the district is yet another marker
of its growth. Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar launched the
programme at the Karthika Tirunal Girls’ Higher Secondary School,
Manacaud here, on Wednesday.
The eco-club of the
school now has the responsibility to nurture close to 80 varieties of
herbs granted to them by the Pharmacognosy Unit, Ayurveda Research
Institute, Poojappura. “The project is funded by the Kerala State
Medicinal Plants Board, but we are the implementing agency,” G.R.
Jayakumar, a research officer of the institute, said.

Herbs such as Pavizhamalli, Nelli, Naga Poovu, and Njaval are among the
herb varieties that the pharmacognosy unit provided.
The
Minister stressed the need to promote Ayurveda and said the government
would take all necessary steps to ensure that the field was encouraged
and tapped for the overall development of the State.
